How to Make Frozen French Fries

Preheat: Preheat your air fryer to ensure it’s nice and hot for crispy fries.

Place the frozen French fries in the basket: Take them right from the bag and put them into the air fryer basket. You don’t need to defrost them first.

Lightly coat the fries: Lightly spray or drizzle a bit of cooking oil over the frozen fries for extra crispiness. You have the option to skip this step, but it can certainly improve the texture if you choose to do it.

Set the cooking time and temperature: Check the package instructions for the suggested cooking time and temperature. Most fries cook well at around 400-425°F (200-220°C). Adjust the setting parameters if necessary based on your air fryer.

Cook the fries: Place the basket containing the frozen French fries into the air fryer and let them cook for the specified time as recommended. Don’t forget to shake or flip them halfway through for even cooking.

Check for crispiness: Near the end of the cooking time, verify if the fries are crispy and golden. Cook for a bit longer if needed.

Enjoy with your favorite toppings: After the fries are cooked nicely, take them out of the air fryer. Then you can add favourite spices or sauces to boost their taste more delicious.

How Long to Cook Frozen French Fries in Air Fryer?

How long does it take to cook frozen french fries in the air fryer

Air fryer cooking times may vary for frozen French fries. Here are some key considerations:

Cook time depends on the type of fries, the basket’s fullness, and the specific air fryer model.

The type of frozen fries you have will determine the cooking duration. Each type of fry, like regular, crinkle cut, waffle, or sweet potato, may need different cooking times.

How full the air fryer basket is can impact the cooking time. Avoid overcrowding the basket as it can impact the fries’ cooking ability.

Different air fryers have different ways of controlling the temperature and air inside, which can change how long the food needs to cook.

Here’s what I found through my testing with a 5.8-quart basket-style air fryer:

  • It usually takes 13 to 18 minutes for regular French fries to get them nice and crispy.
  • Crinkle-cut fries need about 11 to 13 minutes in the air fryer.
  • Waffle fries: Give them roughly 14 to 16 minutes to turn golden and crispy.
  • Sweet potato fries take around 12 to 14 minutes for that perfect crunch.

Here’s a tip: The suggested cook times on frozen fry bags may only sometimes make them crispy, so adding a few extra minutes can make a big difference.

Follow the instructions for your air fryer model, and watch the fries to make sure they’re cooked how you want them.

Notes

Important note: Keep in mind to shake the air fryer basket every 5 minutes! This ensures that the fries cook evenly and prevents them from overcooking. When you shake the basket, it’s also a good time to check if the fries are done to your liking.

Cook Times & Temperatures

Air fryer models can vary in their cook times and temperatures. Our method was tested using both Chefman and Cosori basket-style air fryers at 400°F for a total of 20 minutes. However, each air fryer behaves differently, even if they’re the same model. Monitor the fries and adjust the cooking time or temperature accordingly based on your air fryer’s specifications.

Toaster-oven-style air fryers may take a bit longer than basket-style ones. Additionally, newer air fryers tend to cook hotter and faster than older ones, so keep these factors in mind.

Suggested Cook Times

These are suggested cook times for various types of fries. Consider these starting points as a basis, and feel free to make adjustments as necessary to achieve your desired crispness level:

For optimal results,

  1. Cook shoestring fries for 6-10 minutes.
  2. Waffle fries, crinkle-cut fries.
  3. Curly fries for 10-12 minutes.
  4. Steak fries for 12-15 minutes.

Remember that subsequent batches may require less time.

Can You Reheat French Fries in the Air Fryer?

Yes, you can use the air fryer to reheat French fries. Reheating requires preheating the air fryer to around 350°F (or 175 degrees Celsius).

In a single layer, place the leftover French fries in the air fryer tray.  Reheating time may vary, but it takes about 3-5 minutes.

Keep a check on the fries to avoid overcooking or scorching. Shake the bowl or turn the fries halfway to achieve even heating.

Once reheated, check the fries for desired crispiness and remove them from the fryer. Enjoy your reheated French fries as a delicious snack or side dish.

Air frying revives the texture of reheated fries, making them taste freshly cooked.

What Makes This Recipe So Good?

Air frying French fries is great because it avoids the mess of deep frying and still gives you the perfect crispy texture. Oven baking sometimes achieves a different level of crispiness. This method is easy, efficient, and produces excellent results. What could be better than that?

Not only is air frying simple, but it’s also a fast way to get your desired French fries. There is no need to defrost beforehand; simply place them right from the freezer into the air fryer basket. Cooking times may vary slightly based on a few factors, but most fries will be ready in 10-12 minutes.

Be innovative, and don’t be uneasy to try new things! Frozen French fries serve as a great base for various tasty creations. If you prefer to savor the fries on their own, you can enhance the flavor with your favorite spices. For a spicy flavor, try garlic or onion particles, coated salt, or jalapeño powder.

To take your fries to the next level, load them up with your preferred condiments and toppings – think of it like loaded nachos, but with fries! For example, our Baked Brie and Steak Cheese Fries offer an incredibly delicious, fun twist.

What French Fries to Use?

When deciding on French fries, you can choose frozen varieties found at your local grocery store.

Frozen French fries are specifically designed for air frying and will yield the best results.

Look for French fries with a shape and cut you prefer, such as regular, crinkle-cut, waffle, or sweet potato.

Consider your preference when selecting the type of French fries, as each variety has its texture and taste.

Experiment with different brands or seasoning options to find the French fries that suit your liking.

Can I Make My Fries?

Absolutely! You can make your fries at home. All you need are some potatoes, oil for frying, and your preferred seasonings.

Start by scraping and chopping the potatoes into thin or thick parts, as desired. Rinse them in cold water and then dry them with a towel.

Heat the oil in a deep fry or fryer to approximately 350°F (175°C). Gently fry potato slices in hot oil until golden and crispy texture.
